5 ways you can tweak your Instagram behavior in 2019
Out with the old, and in with the new is so often the mindset people have when entering a new year. It’s the season of intention setting and habit changing. If you haven’t already, I’d highly recommend you take a couple of hours to audit your business practices to see where you have room for improvement. Not sure where to start? I’ve prepped a list of 5 ways you can tweak your Instagram behaviors in 2019. Easy enough - start with Instagram and let me know how it goes!
Don’t just like/💜 comments and DMs- Remember the days when it was a big deal when brands liked/💜’d your comments and DMs? I remember feeling cool and special whenever I got a little notification that said “**insert brand I love** liked your comment.” Idk about you, but I don’t really get that tinge of excitement anymore. Because brands have caught on to the fact that it’s important to acknowledge their follower’s love on Instagram, liking/💜ing has become SUCH a common practice, so in turn, it no longer feels as special. I challenge you to take a couple extra seconds to craft a response that seems more meaningful. Trust me, your followers (and even potential followers) will really appreciate the effort!
Give allll the feedback- People add sliding scales, polls, and questions to their stories for a reason… they want you to participate! Give it a try. If you need more convincing, it might just make you look better for being a more engaged follower. (BUT I’d prefer if you engaged because you wanted to, not just because you were hoping it would better you, but, hey, whatever works 😂)
Comment on posts with intention- If you do nothing else in 2019, please stop copying and pasting vague, cookie cutter comments. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t roll his or her eyes when they see comments that clearly have nothing to do with the caption. So instead of wasting time posting comments that don’t make you look like a genuinely interested follower, either craft a response that touches on the content of the caption/answers a question if one is asked, or save your time and don’t comment at all. Harsh, I know, but it’ll yield a better ROI. I Promise!
Stop using hashtags as the only source of new potential followers- Hashtags have been the go-to source for discovery of new accounts for quite some time, which means chances are a lot of the hashtags you search have become overly saturated. Sure, there are definitely some gems tied to amazing content, but those are few and far between. Instead, find accounts that you really align with - y’know the ones where you feel like you could be friends with the person running the account - and engage with their engaged followers. There’s a huge key to this one, though: engage with ZERO expectation of anything in return; engage for the sake of engaging otherwise chances are your motive will be blatantly obvious. Also, I’m sure you all know this, but please don’t say anything along the lines of “Hey, I love your page! You should check out mine!” That may seem like common sense, but sadly, I see it more times than I’d like to admit 🙈
Give more than you ask- This is inspired by one of my favorite entrepreneurs, Gary Vaynerchuk. It stems from one of Gary’s core messages, something he calls “jab, jab, jab, right hook.” Jabs are Gives, while right hooks are Asks. In essence he’s encouraging all brands and content creator to give away content (think: tips, general knowledge, giveaways, etc.) more than they ask something of their followers (think: share this, buy that). The root of this practice is based in providing value to your followers rather than expecting them to do something for you. Now, it will likely take more time for you to reap the benefits that you’re hoping for, (i.e. more followers, increased sales, etc.) but I would bet a whole lot of money that you’ll be more successful in the long run. Don’t believe me? Check out Gary’s book, Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook.
There you have it - 5 ways you can tweak your Instagram behaviors in 2019 for the better! Is there one that stands out to you in particular? One you like more than the others? If so, let me know below, or on my latest IG :)
I hope you all have the best year yet! Happy 2019 🎊
Until next time,
